Thermal stress and its impacts on livestock ruminants

With global warming, livestock animals are increasingly often subjected to thermal stress.

Thermal stress is a stress experienced by an organism when it can no longer manage excess heat and maintain an optimal body temperature, under the pressure of excessive ambient temperature and relative humidity.

  Stress zone
  Mild to moderate stress
  Moderate to severe stress
  Severe stress

The optimal ambient temperature for ruminants in a livestock building is between 5 and 15°C. Starting at 22°C, the relative humidity of the living area affects their stress levels, especially from 40% relative humidity onwards: this is referred to as thermal stress.

Consequences of thermal stress on the animal

  • Increase in body temperature: above 38.5°C in cows
  • Hyperventilation: increased heart rate with increased respiratory movements (beyond 50 movements/min: state of stress)
  • Hypersalivation and sweating: significant loss of inorganic elements such as sodium and potassium
  • Decrease in overall animal activity: limited movement within the building, prolonged standing
  • Disruption of general metabolism
  • Reduced feed intake
  • Reduced production (milk, growth)
  • Disruption of reproduction (libido, fertility, fecundity, possible abortion)
  • Loss of products (milk, growth)
  • Reduced profitability of the livestock operation

Presentation of ZenCow sensor®

ZenCow is a comprehensive solution consisting of an instantaneous THI (Temperature Humidity Index) measurement sensor paired with a dedicated application , designed to assess and monitor the thermal stress status of a herd of ruminants in real-time, within the livestock building.

THI Sensor

Features :

  • Real-time display of the THI and the maximum THI over the last 24 hours
  • Recording of THI in the animals' environment and hourly data logging in the sensor's memory
  • Warning of entry into the stress zone with a light indicator and an alert signal

Dedicated application

Features :

  • Bluetooth connection with the phone and/or PC
  • Visualization of recorded data and graphical monitoring
  • Visualization of thermal stress levels with a color-coded system for stress zones
  • Possible customization of a data field

Tool’s benefits

Tool for raising awareness about thermal stress within the livestock building

Features :
– Simple to use and install
– Interactive
– High-tech at a reasonable price

Particularities :
Multifaceted translation of the THI readings through :
– Graphical zones on the application
– Alerts on the sensor
– Personalized recommendations (upon user request)

Intérêt pour l’éleveur:
Avoid a drop in production by quickly intervening with the herd

Benefits for the livestock operator:
Provide the best advice to the farmer to avoid performance drops and economic losses in livestock farming
